Something different
« on: January 10, 2013, 12:08:11 PM »
One of my bread and butter areas of work is crafting tools. This one was a first though. It was a request for a multi tool consisting of a niddy noddy/nostepinne/drop spindle with three whorls and a WPI gauge on the niddy noddy shaft, all in purple heart. Took a bit of thinking out.
This is the separate components and the assembled niddy noddy

In laymans terms......The niddy noddy (assembled tool) is for wrapping spun yarn into a skein, the nostepinne, top thicker arm, is for wrapping the yarn into a ball, the spindle, with one of the whorls attached, is for spinning fleece into the yarn. The WPI gauge in the center is for measuring the ply of the yarn. Number of wraps per inch gives it's thickness. The whorls are different weights giving the drop spindle a heavier or lighter drag on the fleece as it is spun allowing the spinner to make thicker or thinner yarn.
Hope that helps not confuses. I often get asked to make something and have to go and research it to find out what it is etc. Makes a change from bowls and platters LOL.

I sometimes talk to a lady nearby who spins, so I know all the parts you've made (although she does not use drop spindles she tells me) but this is the first time I've seen all three made into one toll, a very clever concept - I trust it has a market.

It isn't something I would make except to order. This was specifically asked for so is sold. A bit too out of the ordinairy to keep in stock I think.

Hi Pete, that's nice to see and interesting in what and how they all work together. A turners life was not all bowls and platters, we miss today just what of everything they did make.

I posted a Lace Bobbin winder & bobbins that my sister wanted made for her Lace making, it's interesting in just finding out how to make one or to find details for them.

Cheers for sharing with us.
