Lathe Upgrade

Been a while since posting!
I'm looking to upgrade my lathe from the £250 craft supplies one I started with, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I see Axminster are changing to hobby and trade levels these days, any thoughts?

 I have a Record 1624-44 which is an excellent lathe and you can usually get a package deal that includes a few extras for less than £1000.        Barry

I'll only add 2 things;

 - that there is no lathe that fits all, consider if you want to turn spindles of bowls (mostly) and use that as a staring point, and

 - definitely go for something with variable speed.

I agree with George and  if you're quick and buy one of the white ones you can get it for £588 with an extra 5% if you buy in store
