Turning a natural edge platter?

The pictures of the trenchers interest me. The centre dish is turned in the normal fashion, but how would you do the smaller corner dish? Some sort of jig and counter weight and a lot of space?

Any body share a thought on that?

Now I've never done it but if I had to think about it, I'd go with a a bearing guided cove bit in a circular guide.

Okay, so it's not turning but I'd lay odd's the turners would have carved out the small recess. I think it would be a difficult thing to try turn on a pole lathe being so far out of balance.

I have to agree that the little hollow will have to be carved out and hand sanded or perhaps with the drill?

Going to give a go with a piece of pine plank (sorry) that I found laying around. It is well seasoned and zero sap! Unfortunately its not going to be very big but a nice experiment all the same!

Hmm which gives me another idea!  ;D
