Hello John,
this looks to be very nicely turned and finished,unusual with the burnt lettering. When I make these I prefer to make the handle fit straight through the head and make a feature of the wedging .

It looks very good. I have recently turned a couple as a demonstration piece. They make an excellent exercise as both halves of the gavel head must match which is nothing like as easy as you have made it look.

I've never had a reason to turn a Gavel but always admired the symmetry of their form. And this is equally attractive for all the right reasons.
