Tall Apple Burr Goblet
« on: March 17, 2013, 10:11:51 PM »
Guy's, I was hoping to hold off posting this, but as it's already been seen in the Announcements section, well I guess a set of proper photos are needed.

I was given a bit of apple branch with some burr. I saw it as the cup of a goblet, so I made this.

The stem and finial are Black walnut.

It stands 335mm to the base of the cup, 420mm to the top of the cup, 575mm to the top of the finial and the cup it 110mm across.

Reg Hawthorn was kind enough to select it as the winning entry in the AWGB AGM Instant Gallery. I feel very honoured and slight embarrassed as it was my first attendance and hence first entry.

Comments and Critiques as always please.

Hi
I've never seen such an elegant stem on a goblet, the finial's not bad either!!!!!!!  Excellent

Very nice indeed, is it me or has your work taken a big step up. Probably I have just not been paying attention.

John (BHT),

Thank you, I don't know 'deserved', I think there were 2 other items, to my eye, that were on the table equally, or even, more worthy of the honour.

George,

This is the tall goblet I was telling you about, I am rather proud of it.

Roderick,

2 tricks, lots of practice with a skew and learn to 'see the curve' (having said that I only started to see it about 2 years ago.)

Arcos,

When the cup was turned off the blank, I left a 6mm dia tenon and sawed through it, and the top of the stem has an equivalent round mortice (drill hole). And the ubiquitous Super Glue to hold them together of course.

Eric,

Thank you.

Mark,

the above comment about 2 years applies, but I've always been a spindle turner (look at all the current postings, they are spindles in one form or another.) However I've only recently acquired/made the tools to hollow out taller vases, and into side walls of Hollow-forms. Also why I still make more Tardis' when hollowing than anything else - but it's all practice.
Now I'm looking forward to the course you & George are running during the Summer - So lot's of practice to get in so that I can be worthy of the lessons you'll both be imparting.

Yes Bryan, you've taken a MEGA leap ..  or yep the practice has payed off, beautiful flow, form and finish.

Well done

David
