Dragon lidded hollow form
« on: December 19, 2012, 03:39:15 PM »
This hollow form is 14 1/2"high x5"dia x 3/16" wall thickness and turned from Sychamore. It was textured, burnt and verdigris wax rubbed in as a result of a recent Mark Sanger demo at our club. The lid was turned, carved and coated with copper metalic paint.
Comments and critiques welcome.

Hello GwilymF, I like the Hollow Form very much and the texture and colour but not so keen on the lid nice carving but to me it seems out of place.

Hi Gwilym, stunning form and finish and the Dragon, he may not be cute, but what details, excellent, looks a little like an egg and the first hatchling.. OK some will say it's no egg, but what do Dragons lay..

Cheers  David

Gwilym,

The effect you've created in that Sycamore is awesome, it's not the most inspiring of timbers but great for adding colour and you've done that very well. Did you brush the grain before adding the verdigris wax to get the effect?

Yes it could stand alone as a vase but you see it with the Dragon finial and who are we to argue.  David see's it as a hatchling, I think it could be a little larger. To me it looks slightly swamped by the vase size in comparison.

Did you carve it as well as turned the vase that is not quite clear in your text.

Thanks all for your comments.  dr4gOnfly the vase was wire brushed after texturing and burning then the verdigris wax was applied. The lid was turned then carved before colouring. Hope that answers your question.

Well done Gwilym, front cover of Revolutions.

Bet that's a copy you'll keep for posterity.

Well done Gwilym ..

Bryan, I was about to say you'd got your copy early, as I'd not checked what came in todays post, normal junk in the bin .. I usually have to go to the door, for things which won't go through the slot, a check round to if it came and .. and someone has filed it in the 'have read' pile and not told me .. anything to keep me working .. ;D ...

Cheers   David

Lovely finish on the form. Could you explain how you did it so a newbie can understand. I like the dragon too but not sure if I like the two together.

Thanks
Paul

Which came first the dragon or the egg?

I love it and it's perfect timing with the 6 Nations!

 ;)

Also just seen this on the cover of revolutions, very nice & well done.

Amazing the difference in colours it looks green on the cover but more blue in your picture, unless that`s my laptop.

Cheers.

Hi Gwilym

It was a very enjoyable visit to your club and great to see your work on the front cover on Revolutions. I like the effect you have achieved here very much.

Catch up it you are at Yandles in the spring.

Hi Gwilym

An excellent example of turning, hollowing, carving, texturing and colouring. You've done it all in this one, well done!
