A very sappy bit of yew!
« on: April 01, 2013, 08:22:16 PM »
Today I spent most of the day making light-cord-pull pendants for all over the house, so ended up just making one trinket box for stock. This was out of a small, immature branch, so very little heartwood and loads of sapwood. I decided to make the most of it by displaying the heartwood in the finial and keeping the body plain - just a couple of friction-burnt lines.
13cm high, x 4.5 cm diameter.

Comments and criticisms welcome....Les

Cheers Bill....I think that I'll keep this one for a while to let the sapwood colour-up a bit. I'm sure that it will be a stronger colour in several months time.

gwyntog,

I like the box but I'm having trouble with the finial, it doesn't look balanced in it's dimensions against those of the box. That's not to say it's wrong (Mark Sanger taught me that), but for me, a little slimmer and taller would have worked.

Overall I like the box and the finial but like Others not together. I would have put a simple knob on a box that shape personally which would probably be different to others as well. All down to personal taste really.
