A Life Bowl (with a nod to Woody)
« on: April 07, 2013, 08:21:15 PM »
Here we go guy's, one of this weekends offerings, a Life Bowl.

Sycamore, 235mm (9¼") dia by 35mm (1 3/8") high. Finished in wax.

The texturing detail was done with my new acquisition from Yandles a Mini-Arbortech - well you've got to play, haven't you! Having finally got a texture I liked (which took several attempts) I then scorched it to add colour and de-fluff the timber.

C & C welcomed as always, and thanks for looking,

Hi there....the texture that you've given the rim of the bowl has set me thinking. I've been toying with the idea of texturing something and this system might well be right for me. What I particularly liked was the way that, in the second photo, the texturing reflects the grain pattern in the wood. Did it take long to work the texture?

Lez,

the lathe was spinning at about 400 rpm and the arbortech at 12,000 rpm - so no it did not take long to do, but as I said, learning to get a keep-able texture took several attempts. Which meant a 10" blank finally finished at 9¼".

So to answer your question, about half an hour.

Nice work, the texturing and scorching really make the piece

Hi Bryan,
I do like the texture of the edge but I'm afraid that is all I like. The shape does nothing for me, I know it is practical and the finish looks good but this time it doesn't float my boat.
Sorry.
Regards
John
