Les, you don't need a 3 phase supply. The motor is three phase and the inverter converts the domestic supply to power the motor, which also provides the facility of variable speed control. You can't have VSC on a single phase motor, hence the need to swap it for a 3P and put the inverter between it and the domestic supply.
