What`s been keeping me busy
« on: December 06, 2013, 08:22:19 PM »
I`ve started turning a few pens again.

Pink Ivory & Maple with aluminium inlay on a sierra kit.

Padauk & Cherry Celtic knot with aluminium & black plastic inlay on a Euro pen kit.

Brown Oak Jr Gents pen with aluminium & black plastic inlay.

Cocobolo on a Jr Gents kit with scalloped aluminium & black plastic inlay.

Acrylics on chrome sierra kits.

Cheers.

Doug.

Hi Doug, one very nice group of pens and mix of materials,  albeit as a puritist, it's the Jr Gents for me, the brown oak looks in part as an Ichthys, and the Cocobolo maybe masonic.

Well done.

Your pens are stunning.  In relation to the aluminium you use, how thick is it and do you use any special tools?  I was given some very thin stainless steel recently, but it simply blew the blank when I tried to drill through it.

That is a lovely selection. I particularly like the cocobolo one.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Sorry for the slow reply I don't log in that often these days, in fact I'd forgotten this post as it's nearly a year old, thanks for all the kind comments

Your pens are stunning.  In relation to the aluminium you use, how thick is it and do you use any special tools?  I was given some very thin stainless steel recently, but it simply blew the blank when I tried to drill through it.

Heat is the problem when you come to drilling, the glue gets hot & gives up the ghost resulting in the blank coming apart as you discovered.
I tried several glues on some thick aluminium but even the heat resistant ones wouldn't hold the blank together so I went back to using aluminium from beer cans as in the pens above. In those I have sandwiched a piece of black plastic between 2 pieces of aluminium which gives me an insert the same width as the kerf of my bandsaw blade which in turn aids alignment when gluing up the blank.

Cheers.

Doug.
