I think this is one of those 'dress the tree' things where people knit etc things for the trees and bushes.

An interesting exercise in crochet work.
Any idea what it was in aid of. Normally for some charity or art demonstration.
Looks good anyway.

It is called yarn bombing or guerilla knitting and is done on all sorts of things, not just trees. Some pictures here

Hi Everyone, Pete is correct it is called "Yarn Bombing" It is to those you love or have lost this tree has 1500 Crocheted squares on it made from synthetic wool which is not harmful to the tree each square is produced in South Africa by women from poor communities to help boost their income and teach them new skills.
After the yarn squares are taken down these will be washed and made into blankets and sent to Sierra Leone or given to a homeless charity in the local area.
                                        This Tree raised £5,132:75.

John. Thank you for the explanation,  that is an awsome idea. What a wonderful project and especilly the  money raised as an outcome from it.

If nothing else it is inspiring.
