Horse safe
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:00:17 PM »
I have been asked to make some halter weights for a local riding stable, these are traditionally made of oak or elm.   However the owner would like them to be heavier but not bigger, arent customers wonderful.

After checking the wood store I have found some nice pieces of Jarra, Iroko and Ekki does anyone know if these are horse safe please.

John when I used to make horse boxes one of the timbers we used was Jelutong for flooring and Elm for the tops of rails. Jelutong was hard wearing against the hooves and Elm was less likely to have "sharp" splinters when the horse chewed on it. I have made something similar and bored them out and filled them with lead shot (no idea where to get that these days)but I encased the shot with resin to stop them rattling as that can spook the horse.

Thank you all for the comments I cant find any info on them at all with regards to horses so as suggested I will stick to the traditional woods.

I will mention the idea of weighting them with something and see what he says.

I googled the info on those furry things with long faces....... surely one of them won't need weights to keep them on the ground :D

They must need something, they have lumps of metal nailed to their feet to help keep them on the ground!
