« on: February 21, 2014, 12:45:56 PM »
I`ve just turned a micro goblet in Purple Heart with a captive ring,I took the pics with a 5P coin with the goblet to show the scale of the turning, smallest one I`ve made thus far, cheers,Eric.
ps,its 8mm tall and 3 1/2 mm acrossthe stem is 3/4mm thick

Now that's small...

A well achieved turning.

I'd suggest you've pushed purpleheart as far as you can, the openness of the grain is almost too large for the goblet. You'll be looking for a finer grained timber for your next one.

yes, didn`t notice that till I took the close up pics, have some ebony and blackwood, might need an even smaller skew chisel though, was having trouble getting in for the captive ring with the 1/8" skew.

When I was doing things like this for dolls houses I used dental pics to get inside the captive rings. Used carefully you can get really small details. Lot's of fun to do.

Eric,

something else you can try/use are masonry nails, they are great for really small homemade tools.

I use masonary nails, but the ones I have are the same thickness as my 3mm spindle gauge and 3mm skew from Robert Sorby, the Sorby tools last alot longer between sharpening than masonary nails to,so save time, just need a 1.5mm skew now and I`m sorted haha.
