Ringed Sphere
« on: March 19, 2014, 02:55:20 PM »
This ringed sphere which is 6"dia and sits on a 5"high base. Two blanks were semi hollowed, glued together and turned to a 6"sphere. It was then routered to give two flanges at right angles to each other. These were then routered to form two rings that were left attached to the sphere at four points. The sphere was then pierced and textured and the rings coated with verdigree copper. The base was carved with a slot at the top to allow the sphere to sit on it and ebonised.      A very imaginative and striking piece.
The technical side must have taken a lot of thought.

Not alot of room for error.. mind-boggling work and detail as usual.

Very well done, excellent result. Thank you for the WIP.

Very challenging a well thought out piece. Like the colours. the only thing that I personally would do is to have the stand attached to the ring without it touching the ball so that you can see the gap and support. Probably not the best description you have heard hope you understand what i am saying

What a concept, I can see you running with this idea for a wile and am already looking forward to where you take it next.

But I'll ask the question, how did you hollow it? - Other than carefully.

Ha caught myself saying that too much work lol a great piece love the random finish on the sphere and the smooth lines of the stand, opposites do attract.

Thanks all for your comments. D4agOnfly the hollowing was done in each half using a template with a spigot and groove in the faces of the blanks to enable them to be glued up accurately.
