Off centred bowl with embellishments
« on: May 06, 2014, 06:24:37 PM »
I've fancied having a go at this for some time. An off-centred bowl with embellishments of the widest part of the rim. At first, I considered using a semi-precious gem-stone, then I considered pyrography, but ended up deciding to use a contrasting burr to decorate it with.

It's in ash, which has a bit of ripple in it, with oak burr from some reclaimed beams that I bought recently. Diameter is 13" and it's out of a 3" deep blank.

In my mind I wanted to create smooth curves. No thin, crisp rim and certainly not a high gloss finish....this was to be soft and sensuous, with a soft sheen for a finish. It's had 3 coats of Danish Oil, which have been lightly buffed.

Hope you like it!...C&C always welcome

Personally though your workmanship is excellent the most impressive thing for me is the way you are continually trying something different. A man after my own heart. Really like this. In my effort to find something to criticise my only suggestion would be that the burr was a bit more delicate? That is purely personal taste though. Love it really

Les,

what can I say, your ability to turn and eye for creating new and interesting designs have brought you to a level where you can only be described as an accomplished turner.

Well done.

However, if you manage to visit my little workshop, I promise you nothing but a skew to hold. Come on, lets see some spindle work!

Les I think this is a very nice piece, I don't think I have seen anything like it before and think it has been executed very well indeed ,I like it but.......................in my very humble opinion I think it would have been a better piece if the bowl had been made from Oak with the Burr Oak embellishment. I have never like mixing Oak and Ash or any of the British hardwoods really as I don't think they go that well together.
Now watch someone shoot me down in flames and give a really good pairing of British hardwoods.

Les, well thought out and executed with the grain to the offset in relation to the embellishment.

Like it, well done.

Siwd mae Les, neis iawn wir!

Nicely executed project. first one I think I've seen uing this method. How have you attached the burr, is it just glued/epoxied?

Thanks for all the comments, guys, it's very encouraging.

Hi Rod....it's glued and each of the panels has 3 dowels to stop it sliding whilst I put the cramps on. The round 'button' was turned with a tenon which sits in a 25mm hole.

Hi Les     We both like the concept and the idea.    The wood certainly contrasts well
                giving the piece impact
