The same but different
« on: May 28, 2014, 02:49:00 AM »
This one is a variation on my normal spirals with a twist at the bottom. As its another first I have some reservations on how successful  it is. So will be looking forward to your C&C on this one.

...and the same, but different it is! Coves instead of beads, a vase shape instead of a more spherical shape, yet unmistakably one of yours, Hughie. I really, really like this. I particularly like the way that the grain emphasises the shape of the coves.

I admit I do choose the blank for each particular piece and grain orientation is a major consideration. Coves well you gotta mix it up, well I do  :D  Thanks Les.

I can tell you I like it and find it very impressive but other than that it is so far beyond my level of experience that I can only wonder at it  :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hughie,

a taller vase shape as opposed to your more normal spherical forms, I personally like the vase shape, it gives more scope for design than the sphere. Looking forward to future editions of this series to see where you take it.

Also I'm quite sure the spirals are moving in a clockwise direction (viewed from above) to others you have posted, am I right?

:D its all to do with the hemisphere and how you look at it. I must admit vases do offer more choice with the single line spiral. I have included a lower shot of the bottom so you can see how  the spirals finish

Reservations Hughie, It's yet another beauty, awesome piece, got your name all over it ... the design has really made the grain and figure pop .. what scabby old bit of timber did you use ..  ;D .. you'd got one excellent finish.

Cheers, somewhat green with envy ...  David

And there was me thinking it was the Coriolis effect.

I've got to try spiraling I just love the effect.
