My first 'show and tell'
« on: May 28, 2014, 01:31:03 PM »
I thought I had better bite the bullet and show something I have just turned. This is my second finished attempt at hollowing and I used the Hope 6mm carbide.
Woods are American black walnut for the base, sycamore for the body and Cherry for the knot. 105mm by 55mm

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I like this sort of lamination. From here it looks pretty good to me. Why so slow in posting?

Graham, This is an astonishing piece, well executed and finished, really stunning use of combined timber .. your second ever ... am so impressed, well done, as Pete said .. why so slow.

This looks to be the start of something interesting with your future work.

Graham,

a great first posting, especially if as you say it's only your second attempt at any sort of hollowing.

Yes the woods sit well together but it's the Celtic knot. I've seen many that just don't work quite as well even on smaller pieces but to achieve it on this size of vessel is excellent.

This is a very nice piece...love the way you have done the inlay (is it inlay?)...either way its been very neatly done.
every thing gels together very well

Correct me if I am wrong Graham but the knot is doe by laminating. Cut your blank at say 30 degrees, insert contrasting piece and glue up. When dry repeat cutting the angle from another side. Do this four times and as long as you get your measurements right (as Graham has done) you will get the Celtic knot. Something I saw a pen turner do years ago and have been meaning to do but not yet got around to it. LOL

I'm with Pete. I enjoy the piece for it's merit. On close inspection the intersections do not align this indicates the knot as not being an inlay.

It is exactly as Pete says. The success or failure lies totally in the cut and layup stage rather than specific turning skills. I found the easiest way was to cut on a mitre saw with a poisoning stop to try and keep the cut lined up and a jig / framework to hold it in place while the glue dries.
