Second go at CA on Cherry Vase / Pot
« on: June 08, 2014, 09:49:42 PM »
Hi All

I've had another go at finishing with CA on a cherry vase, this time I applied the CA while the pot was not spinning and then spun and over coated with boiled linseed oil (Thanks David) it worked much better did the inside as well as out.

270mm x 220mm had a big neck someone wanted it to put flowers in that come in the water bag things what ever their called.

Ed,

the shape has an overall feel of an earthenware vessel about it. I find this intriguing from a piece of wood, in fact the internal view of the grain almost looks like the potters finger marks in the clay.

The finish is far better than the last CA finished vase you showed us, although I’m still not sure I’d like your CA bill, it’s got to be one of the more costly finishes I’ve seen.

CA not that bad I pay 1.40 for 50g and it does not use that much, I'll persist if the grain looks like it would benefit from CA

Ed,

I said (or tried to) the grain (rings) look like the finger marks you sometimes see in hand thrown pots, enhancing the eathenware effect you've created, there is nothing wrong with the finish at all.

Ed, that's one nice piece and likely to have finished better for the BLO which is a finish by itself.. I'm not sure from the many means of applying that are recommended, how or which way this finish is used, you've looked it up, to have achieved the result you've got here.

Has the CA become your favored finish or are you using it to stabilize the timber, as you've had past problems.

Well look stunning with that flower display.

Les I didn't think that you were saying that anything was wrong with the finish, just the cost of it, the knots and grain in the base of the pot look good finished so that why I took the photo.

David, I looked up the pen turners using CA and BLO sanded off the last pot and re-coated but there were still loads of fine lines or it looked like little cracks.

So this time I applied the CA while the pot was on the lathe not spinning and wiped it along the grain once the pot was covered I spun up the lathe and coated the CA in BLO, left this for about 5 minutes and then wiped away the BLO then left it for about an hour, then sanded with 600 grit and repeated the process 3 times the last coat of CA I burnished and it has come up much better.

I'm only really using it to stabilize the timber, but now I can get a high gloss finish with it I might use it if I think that I want a gloss finish.

ED   can`t see out of my glasses when finishing pens with C A how I would go on with something that size I don't know
Excellent finish from here.....You have kept the wood colour light and bright.

Cheers Ed, your method is working well,  you're achieving one excellent finish, as you like the glossy... could be glass or glazed earthenware even.

Ed,

one question (okay, I always have one question!).

How do you apply the CA, it's not a forgiving glue with a long open time and the fumes are really not nice at all.

It has only just dawned on me that by CA you mean superglue !! I can hardly believe you have coated the whole of that vase with it !  Will Linseed Oil serve any purpose on top of CA I would have thought it would not get to the wood with the CA as a barrier ,so to speak .  It seems to have worked for you anyway , and a good job with the turning as well , but not something I intend to try any time soon ,...... Terry...

I apply it with paper towel the second and third coats go on much smoother than the first, the BLO acts as an accelerator and it also seems to smooth out the CA.

Your quite right the CA smells and you can feel the flumes so you have to be quick, I have a Trend Airflow and tried wearing that but it was even worse.

That is truly impressive. My 'to try' list is reaching epic proportions.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Very impressive finish.  Did you use the thin CA adhesive?  I have watched a video on you tube where thin CA glue was sprayed onto work with an air brush.  BHT replied to this thread warning me of the dangers which has made me think twice.  Used on pens it provides a quick, durable finish so if you can solve the application problem I think you could be onto a winner!
I may get a mask with a proper filter and try spraying after seeing your work!
