Dragon Platter

This is the largest piece I've turned, it's 20"dia x 1 1/2" and turned from Iroko.  It was turned leaving a10"dia x 5/8" raised centre on which a dragon was drawn. A router was then used to remove the excess wood around the outline of the dragon which was then relief carved and coloured red. Celtic knot work was then carved around the rim and the background pyrographed. Comments and critiques welcomed.

What an excellent project; it must have taken very many hours. With relief carving such as this, I always wonder just how you get the background so clean and smooth.....I guess it must be down to hours of scraping and sanding, or is there a trade secret that we non-carvers don't know about?

Thanks all for looking and commenting. You are right Les, lots of scraping and sanding getting the area around the dragon clean and level, as much time as it took to carve the dragon. the rim took almost as long but the pyrographed background covered a lot of little imperfections.

That is stunning Gwilym. I was going to comment on how long it must have taken but I see everyone else has done the same thing  :)
You must be chuffed to bits with that.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Well this a true work of art had you not put up the other pictures I would have thought you has stuck the dragon on to the platter, the carving and pyro work on the rim looks so good. I great looking piece which truly reflex's the hours of work that you have put in to it.

I think that this looks great, and a job very well done.

One excellent Wyvern you've created Gywilym, let alone the intricately detailed and highlighted knot motif.

Can see this housed in a Cymru Museum for the Nation.

Like this very much, well done.

 Cheers  Dewi

Some dragons, drawn, painted sculpted or carved just don't make the grade, they seem to lack something that gives them a living spark. This one looks right, it could walk off the platter and breath fire.

The turning is excellent, the post work is beyond that, it's beautiful.
