Hollow form with lid
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:09:50 PM »
I finished this last week without a lid,but wasn`t happy with the shape of the base which I copied from the book Classic Forms by Stuart E Dyas,so yesterday I returned the base, making it slightly thinner and with a bead instead of being a square edge at the bottom, also hollowed the underside of the base a bit, then I made a lid for it out of a small bowlsave piece of Walnut and an Ebony finial, the base is spalted Silver Birch, the hollow form is Spalted Sycamor, the hollow form is about 5mm thick, the lid about 6mm,its 31cm tall(12 14 ") and 13 1/2 cm (5 5/16") at the widest point, cheers, Eric.

Eric, This seems to have been missed so far, well it's had the views.

Bottom up, the rolled (bead) foot works, into the birds beak, nice flow with the ring (raised bead) adding a nice detail before the curve into the next bird's beak an the final capital, which carries the perfect HF. Like the lid, the grain forms the detail, not over powering at that size. As for the finial, the length is right, yet it lacks the slender flowing details and the tear drops. IMHO. Really is a well balanced form. Well done.

To me this is a well balanced and exciting form, the finial is plain in comparison but it balances well.
I am not a lover of spalted wood but this is much more subdued than most and suits the subject well. It reminds me strongly of Burr Maple for some reason.
A beautiful piece.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Eric, the shape of the form and upstand (base) work well together. The gentle colours within the spalting make it work where maybe plain timber would bot have held it together in the same way.

I also am not sure about the finial. I think it needs just a little shape to carry it off more successfully.

I see it as an architectural form, and for some reason is reminiscent of some of the American telecom towers I've seen in my travels. Please don't take that as a downside, we all see things differently and as Mark Sanger tries to explain in this months Woodturning, the steps between reality and inspiration are many and varied and probably as convoluted as my thought processes.
