Spalted beech bowl
« on: October 06, 2014, 01:47:57 PM »
This piece of beech was amongst a batch that I bought several months ago, from a turner who had hung up his chisels. Turns out that it grew less than half a mile from my workshop. Anyway...it's a smashing piece of timber that has been caught at just the right time - any longer and the cream-spalt on one side would have started going punky. I've kept the shape quite plain to let the timber's grain do all the talking. It's 11" diameter and out of a 2" thick board, finished with micro-crystaline wax.

C&C always welcome....Les

Think You Have Captured Something Very Special There LESS

And not wishing to detract from that.......... but I can not help but ask.
Is that a fast moving river at the bottom...... with storm clouds gathering above.

Les,

the internal photo belies the overall sweep of the outershape, I'd have guessed it was a shallow flat bottomed bowl.

Your finish is a perfect as always.

Not sure I see Di & Tony's river, I see the seas of N Wales bashing against the cliffs on a blustery day.

I think it's Jolly old scar face and a map to Treasure Island .. X must be on the underside ... have you captured a ghost in the inner wall middle picture passing through the outer wall....  definitely you've made it a stunning piece.

Yes to the river and storm clouds. I love it when woodgrain shows other pictures in it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
