My First attempt at a yew vase from a log
« on: October 30, 2014, 06:22:50 AM »
Here is my first attempt at turning a vase from a yew log. I am finishing it with 5 or 6 coat of teak oil.

I like that. It is very difficult IMHO to make vases etc out of Yew without it splitting.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hi Broadsea (don't know your name!)....you've done a good job, there. Are you making for yourself, or selling. If selling, you might want to conisder adding a little something to it....I did one a few weeks ago and didn't worry about the splits as it tends to be a feature of yew. I just made a load of staples from silver wire and then stuck it in a gallery. they've put a price tag of £130 on it, which is much more than I would have got for it as 'just a vase'.

Keep up the good work...Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

I love that idea Les. My name is John. Do you mind if I share one of the photos with some experienced turners that I know?

Not at all John...I'll even tell them where it's displayed, in case one of them has £130 to spare  :)
