Lovely piece, Ed, and I'm always in awe of the amount of work that goes into carving projects.
As for the wax, I've had two different successful methods. One was to use a gas blow torch by just waving it across the grain. The other method was to use a compressed air blower, but that will work only whilst the wax is still very fresh and soft, before too much of the solvent dries off.
