A vase turned then re-turned.
« on: January 21, 2015, 04:09:11 AM »
Hello everybody. Few days ago I made a vase ,14 inch high, and decorated it with pyrography (first picture). The shape did not convinced me so I re-turned it removing the bead, thinning the lower half and leaving a simple foot. Of course I had to make half of the pyrography again and also added a few leaves to the roses. After some now removed pyrography  I made the little flowers in what is going to be the final vase (second photo).
At the end of all this process I'm not sure which of the two vases I prefer. Can  you give me your opinion on the before and after vase? Thanks.

If I had to choose it would be the first one I think the base is better.

I like both versions but also prefer the first. The second has lost the nice shape of the foot and the extra flower heads are numerous & very bold so overpowers the original pyrography. Less is more as they say.

I'm with George, the base is better on the first one but the angle below the bead is wrong, if you'd reworked that area it would be a stunner.

But the finished Pyro work on the second photo is what your work is all about, the vase is just your canvas.

I like both the shapes but would have to agree that there is a little to much decoration on the second one.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?
