Brown oak charger
« on: February 22, 2015, 06:31:54 PM »
This piece of timber was amongst several pieces that I bought from a dealer on eBay, and I've been absolutely delighted with the quality of the stock - it cost me £35 for 3 @ 14" diam, 1 @ 15" diam and 1 @ 8" diam, so this piece cost in the region of £7.50. It's finished at 13.5" diameter x 2" deep overall, with a few coats of Danish Oil.

It has moved just a little, but still sits well, without any tendency to rock, so it's fine by me. I usually place my platter face down on a flat surface in my office with a weight on them for a couple of weeks....it always seems to result in a flat rim!

C&C always welcome....Les

brown oak is great stuff isn't it.

when i got some from the crown estate for me to turn so they can sell it in their shop i had blanks that were up to 22" wide and some 600 years old...

danish is the perfect finish in my opinion, nice work.

Love that one and a gorgeous bit of wood.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Brown Oak is a great looking timber for something that was caused by a fungus, thankfully not a rot causing one. Normally a very even colour so I wonder what caused the yellowish stripe which has managed to position it'self very nicely right through the middle.

A simple platter but they are the most useful, doubt this will be sticking around long.

" Brown oak " is just the staining caused by the fungi Fistulina hepatica ( beefsteak fungi ) in the early stages of infection and I can assure you it does very much rot the tree !!  It feeds on the cellulose in wood eventually leaving just the lignin which has a cubical appearance with no strength at all and then it just crumbles to dust .   Laetiporus sulphureous  ( sulphur tuft .. or  chicken of the woods ) is very similar in its actions and colouration . Other fungi do something similar in conifers .  ..  I am pretty sure the yellowish stripe is unaffected wood .  Terry .

Nice and simple design. I particularly like the outside shape.
