A winged bowl made out of an ash burl
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:17:48 PM »
This is one of my turnings that I wanted to keep, I had fun turning it but the wife had promised it to her friend before I had even finished turning it.
Your c and c are welcome Les

Looks really good. Biggest wings I have ever seen (on a bit of wood haha)  ;D

Very nice. I will have to have a go at that.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

this is just a personal opinion, but I think the bowl is either to deep or the wing should be further down the bowl to make it look more aesthetically pleasing,or it could just be my eyes, finish is great though.
welcome to my woodturning world

The proportions don't work for me I would have preferred the bowl to have been half the height that it is.

Have to agree, no criticism of the skill involved but the design / shape isn't for me.

Me too, I'm afraid. I can see the size of the bowl being fine with a smaller wing or rim, or the large wing would be fine on a smaller bowl, but for me, the two big features together tend to fight against each other.
Having said all that, the piece of timber is lovely and it's a fine finish.

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Many thanks for all your comments guys. When I turned this piece it was my first go at a winged bowl and I was trying to keep as much of the burl in the work as I could.
I can see now that keeping more burl in the bowl has also made the bowl less pleasing to the eye.  Many thanks once again Les

Trying to make the biggest item we can out of a piece of timber is a mistake we all make early in our turning careers and even sometimes beyond the learning stage.

Whereas I also agree the bowl section is out of proportion, it does not detract from the skill you've presented to us in showing that you can turn such an out of balance (different wing size's) piece of work, and although you don't give dimensions I'd put the bowl at 6" to 7" deep.

I have to agree with the comments made, the turning looks first class and to turn wings like that show a skill that many will never achieve.

Looks to be one stunning piece of wood

Looks a good effort for a first try to me Les.
Great advice from dr4g0nfly about trying to get the biggest item from a piece of timber, get the shape right and the beauty of the wood will enhance it.
