Urn with screw thread lid
« on: March 05, 2015, 09:04:40 PM »
All of my work is made to order and pretty standard stuff mainly but this might interest you all.
The customer supplied a drawing and asked for it to be in any English wood. I used Yew and took a chance with a little turners licence with the design. He was very pleassed with the result. Would you change a design from a drawing????
C&C welcome.
Sorry about the quality of photo's they were with my phone, the customer picked the job up before I could photograph it with a proper camera.

Hi your interpretation has more  flowing lines than the drawing, I like your version much more.
This is a very nice piece.

I am not surprised he was pleased with it. That is a very nice piece of work.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

....Would you change a design from a drawing?.....
Indeed I would, Steve, but having said that, I'd add that a lot would depend upon my knowledge of the customer. The drawing that you were given is very basic and does not indicate advanced design or sketching skills, which would suggest to me that the customer got the basics of an idea, but would be happy for you to put a bit of professional flair into it. What I find difficult is when you get very precisely detailed drawings - that tends to suggest that the customer knew exactly what he wanted and was able to portray that; in which case, altering their wishes would best be done with consultation. It certainly worked this time!

I must admit that I didn't think that this was a piece of yew....the colour is very muted and the growth rings quite wide apart, suggesting a much quicker growing wood, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Thank you everyone for the replies, it is always good to get feedback.
Les I think you are 100% right with your opinions on changing a design. The wood is definitely yew. It came from Berry Hall (Hampton in Arden) 15 years ago. Sadly not much of it left now. The exact log this came from is pictured below as it was only a few weeks ago it is still sat by my saw, so took a pic to show you.

Thanks for the great comments.
John, my work is mostly production work for joiners, shop fitters and builders etc. I have been turning full time for over 35 years and this is only the second Urn I have been asked to make.

HI Steve,
Very nice piece like it a lot.
Nothing wrong with slight modification to the customers drawing. It would be a different case if the drawing was to scale with measurements etc.
Regards
Ken

Steve,

I think you were right to 'interpret' the customers drawing. At best I'd have suggested that it was a 'I want something like this' sketch, and the Daric (Doric) Finial he suggested would have left a little to be desired. Although he must have seen a picture of something like it to know what he wanted.

As it was an Ern were you given an internal volume it needed to contain as part of the instructions?

dr4g0nfly,
The only measurement was 5" dia. as in the drawing.
I made it 5 1/2 " dia. with the walls 3/16".

I am not sure why I didn't ask for more details maybe that's due to taking orders via email. almost all my customers bring their jobs via a personal visit to the workshop. I gave him a price and he accepted it so I made it.

Thanks for everyone's replies, it is good to hear other peoples opinions.
