Latest piece...
« on: March 17, 2015, 06:43:47 PM »
Hi

This is my latest attempt.....it was a wedge shapes left-over from a bunch of logs I cut up a few days ago....put on one side as I didn't want to junk it but didn't know what to do with it.  Decided today just to give it a go (finally got round to bolting my lathe to the bench so was happier about out of balance chunks of wood).  First pics shows it before (you might have guessed that of course.....).  It still needs some more finishing, I keep spotting sanding marks and the base has some heavy marking which needs some work to remove.  Overall I'm pretty pleased, but don't let that stop you being honest with your comments!

....and the bottom.....let's pretend the nasty power-sanding marks on the base aren't there..... ;D

This is exactly my type of piece...I just love seeing bowls emerge from gnarled old lumps like that.

I'll bet it was fun turning a one bladed propeller. Do you balance it on the lathe or live with the vibration?

Thanks all. Want to tootle through the pile and find another piece now...

George....you're worse than my wife ;-) I found her googling 'full Kevlar body armor for woodturners' the other day.......

Dragonfly......it wasn't too bad to be honest. Its a very lightweight lathe but its very well bolted down to a very sturdy bench. How would you balance e a piece on the lathe?

How would you balance e a piece on the lathe?

You use a backing plate or board with weights fitted opposite to the piece you are turning.
