Oak pod / vessel
« on: April 12, 2015, 07:20:34 PM »
A recently completed hollow vessel / pod from Oak about 300 mm tall ( when stood up ) it is turned green / thin 3-4 mm wall thickness with the intention of it warping/ distorting for an organic style ,and it is very warped  matt finish .  It has an Elsworth style ingrowing/recessed  entrance hole , It is intended to suggest something that could be found near the base of an old hollow tree in a mystical / enchanted woodland .  It is not meant to replicate the shape or form of any classic ceramic or glass vase so please you "perfect form " purists do NOT judge it as such !!!   ( philistines !!! LOL ).. Terry....

Personally this is right up my street. if and when it warps please re-show. Only thing I might have done different is to have the entry hole (I assume that's it on the right?) less 'turned' if that makes sense and more organic itself. main thing I dislike is that you made it and not me LOL.

That's a wonderfully organic piece...I love everything about it and would love to handle it.

Despite what I have said about the 'holey form' bandwagon I actually like that one a lot ( nobody has ever accused me of being consistant ). Never been in an enchanted forest but if it has pixies in it I am all for it.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

This is beautiful. I have always loved the movement that is achieved using green wood. A real beaut.

Thanks guys , and it really is a nice piece to handle as well , very tactile , there is plenty of such wood easily available for very little money for this sort of work if you can visualise it in a log pile ...Terry ..

Terry,

I've looked several times and it always makes me feel like I'm looking at something else. Now I've got it (to me) it looks like one of those pictures you see of a biological cell.

Okay, so, I'm weird!

But like Pete, I think this one will improve with age as it dries and moves and the colour starts to deepen.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!
