Mouse pen holder
« on: May 02, 2015, 05:38:43 PM »
This pen holder was made to illustrate to my sixth formers  how to make  things look cute.
We visited Rob at Axminster Tools who kindly demonstrated how to turn a pen.  The children were asked to design and make a pen and display stand (not a case).  There were lots of pen kits sold that day.

Cute indeed.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

I really like the idea of the nose-ring!

You know what I like about Kids (your word), they are able to stand back from what we know and look at things from a whole new mentally uncluttered way.

I hope this example does not narrow their vision but acts as a springboard to think up and design a whole range of interestingly new ideas.

Keep us informed of where they take this process please Haggy.

Thank you for your comments
I agree fully with your comments Bryan- seeing what I have done doesn't help them in their thinking in one sense.
They are full of innovation so I am able to share with them deign tips you and others talk about.  Design teachers who are not members of the AWGB are missing out.  I do have a lovely piece of work I must photograph and feedback to the AWGB,, turned by an 18 yr old pupil.

Haggy,
That is a real novel idea, I have been making a few mice recently, mainly for decoration on logs of wood but I have been unable to find any small glass beads without holes in.  Could you let me know where you got yours from please?  I am looking for something around 2mm dia (.080").

Cheers
Dave

..... but I have been unable to find any small glass beads without holes in...

Beads with holes in are ok if you use a brass panel pin to fix them (but not if they're toys). It can look quite realistic.

I bought some alphabet beads recently(for condiment mills) from Nbeads. They are Chinese but ship quickly. Try and Google them and see what they have. There are literally thousands of different beads there. Hope this helps. Malcolm.

Hi Dave- they were sewing pins.  The heads come in all colours.  I shortened the shafts using side cutters and used CA glue to secure them.
