Bog Oak

I acquired what I know as a Bog Oak carbuncle a while ago and eventually plucked up the courage to have a go at it, it did not turn out quite as I expected but I like it anyway.

An impressive piece, John.

Do Like it, has a raw appeal to it. Have you spent time with Tony & Di has that torched look.

The shadow on the top image throws the eye into it's a raised rim, had me look at the images a few times.

Is it just an oil finish.

On the size, had to be a number of trips to the grinder with this one.

Cheers for sharing.  David

A cracking piece of bog oak....... You have achieved a nice finished piece from what can be a wood that is
  difficult to work with

A lovely piece, and like David, I too was fooled into thinking that the bowl had a raised lip. I have a big lump of bog oak waiting to turn, so I'll be quite happy if it comes out as well as this.

Like it John like the idea for the natural finish on the outside.

Thank you for your comments.

It wasn't an easy one to do but I like pieces like that, the bit of the broken branch was completely rotten so turning it was fun with hard sections very soft sections and voids.   Several trips to the grinder and a steady hand got there in the end.

It is finished with melamine spray as I thought that would be the best, and easiest, way to get a good finish :-)

I like this a lot John a very 'natural piece' I would imagine you need a fair sized lathe to turn something this size and shape, especially out of oak!

Kind regards

David

impressed - i wouldnt know where to start on an item like that, can i ask how you secured the wood to turn it?
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thank you All

I have the Axminster 1628 and it handled it no problem but surprisingly it was fairly well balanced.

To start with I drilled a hole in the top and used a set of spigot jaws to hold it so I could turn the base flat I then attached it to a face plate to turn the inside.

The finely finished inside balances the naturalistic outside very well.

The bull's eye effect in the second photo shows just how well it is turned and finished.

but I can smell the stuff from here - phew!
