Andy, As for the timber.. I can't make it out, looks almost as if it's a combed grain effect.. not knowing just how old the piece is, you may have teak http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=teak&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1400&bih=885&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=qmEbTpS4D4O4hAexgLnMBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CGIQsAQ or a Mahogany.. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=mahogany&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1400&bih=885&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=IGEbTqz4JY6xhAfa8Y3MBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CHIQsAQ.... Will be interesting to hear other ideas on it.

Andy Coates:
you ask a simple question! You lot should wear a mask when using thinners...
I don't think it's teak, and positive it's not any of the mahogony group...
dark brown with heavy black streaks...but not like the ebony of old...very hard and cuts terribly producing a powdery chip/shaving, no smell, but then it could be forty years old...
but then I know a few smelly forty year olds so that's not definitive!

:) .. :D .. ;D .. :'( ... I've not used what I have lately .... ??? .. :-[... ;D ... THAT's Wenge http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wenge&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=O66&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&prmd=ivns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=D5UbTv69CcW5hAen8InOBw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CA4Q_AUoAQ&biw=1400&bih=885 ... the timber I mean.. Some People's minds.. as to how it reacts or smells.. what you describe is abit like Goncolo Alves, that is just dusty/powery chips, no shaving and almost no grain... ??? ...
Come on folks... thinking caps on... some more ideas... please.
David
PS.... It's the Cellulose sanding sealer... :P ... and having sprayed so much equipment with Cellulose paint in the past.. just a niff today.. ??? ...
Andy Coates:
Not wenge...I have wenge to compare to...
Dave Atkinson:
