Rotten bit of wood
« on: June 05, 2015, 01:36:35 PM »
I found this rotten bit of wood under my lathe that I`d forgotten about, can`t remember where it came from,or what wood it is,it was so soft I had to put a 2" coachbolt (head cut off) in my screwchuck before I found a bit of solid enough wood to hold it,then roughed the outside, bit of a job where all the bits were sticking out(in photo),got it round eventually and carefully, the tool kept trying to drag into the soft bits(real fun that),ptu a chucking point on it,but again awkward,as wood only on 3 out of 4 jaws,so had to hang 2 over edges, the get a bit of grip, but not to hard as one side really really soft, flooded it with superglue in the end and left a spotlight on the area for 1/2 an hour to cook it,was able to get it in the chuck after that and start hollowing the bowl out, couldn`t put the speed up beyond 250 RPM as when I looked closer it was 3 or 4 branches/roots joined together. The wood was really soft on about a third of it,the other two thirds were intermitantly soft/firm,the soft side in the end I had to flood it with superglue which ran out(over half a bottle used, then a third of a bottle(the little glass ones from Liberon)of sanding sealer, that stopped chucks flying off,but still very soft and delicate,so left it a chunky bowl as I didn`t want it to explode all over me and the workshop.

nicely done eric.

is there any chance that it could be a cherry laurel root?

i've some old laurel kicking around in the fire pile and some of it has gone that colour.

Not sure I would have made a bowl from it but more credit to you far using it. Man after me own heart LOL.

I'll bet that was fun to start turning, knocking, vibration and all, but it was worth the effort.

Certainly looks like some form of Cherry to me as well.
