Marquetry inlaid wine bottle coaster
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:11:12 AM »
Continuing my experimentation with marquetry inlays, attached are pictures of an ash wine bottle coaster with an inlay of a bunch of grapes, finished in acrylic gloss lacquer and burnishing cream.

A neat little job, Mendip (sorry, don't know your name). Is the marquetry a commercially sourced inlay, or have you made it up yourself?

The marquetry is "all my own work", something that I have been doing for some years. There are another couple of examples in an earlier post of customised inlays on the tops of a couple of boxes. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Dave --  This looks like a very nice piece with the marquetry, I suppose if you are like me and not really able to do this you could buy in the ready made designs. It was good to meet you at the Burnham demo the other day by the way.

I have been meaning to have a go at this. If my attempts are anywhere near yours I will be well chuffed.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Dave,

This looks a little more complex than the work on the boxes you showed previously. Very delicate work but one that is showing us a new way of decorating our work.

Looking forward to seeing this at the club.
