Hi Steve

Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.

Bryan

Thank you for your comments much appreciated, it is easily recognisable as one of my pieces as it has my name in the bottom right hand corner of the picture  :)

Today on getting up and making the morning brew I looked at the piece again and I like it as it is, bases don't always need to contrast and I am liking the simplicity of this one. Also I can't change it now as it is Johns, but I have a lot more burr ash and Irish Yew to turn so there will be many more.

Thanks again all.

Eight  :o I wondered where all the throw outs had gone from my firewood pile.

No in fairness, George has over the years has purchased and acquired quite a few of my pieces, but then I have acquired a nice industrial pillar drill/other tools a lot of help/wood/ and currently the loan of one of his lathes while I wait for my new one to be delivered so it is a fair barter.

Mark I like the bowl a lot, IMVHO I think the piece should be elevated. My suggestion is one of the coronet horn blanks in African Blackwood just sanded and polished with a small dip turned in the top.

Beautiful as always Mark...... Feel with your expertise / flair.... you will bring this piece to life with a few shadows.
From our own experience playing with plinths / pieces / forms,  its one heck of a jigsaw puzzle to solve.  :) :) :)
  One you achieve with finesse.
  Kind Regards

I find this piece very soothing the bowl contrast not so much in colour but in the fact that it looks old and knarly compared to the base which has a much newer look. So for me a very nice piece.

Thank you Derek

I walk past it now and am very pleased with it.

Will make some more soon once I dig the burr ash out from under the pile which seems to be getting higher every week.  :)

I really like the bowl but, like others, am not sure about the plinth.

Mostly though I really feel sorry for you not being able to afford a WHOLE piece of wood. Come and see me at the seminar. :)

Graham
I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Hello Mark,

Banter aside, I've looked at this piece several times now, my 1st reaction (apart from liking the wood, NE bowl etc.) was that the bowl would sit better off centre, positioned toward one corner (the intersection if you were to divide the board into 1/3s length & width ways). However then I considered this would leave a large space, that empty wouldn't look right, but if you were to copy the NE bowl form, but say a 1/3 of the size and place it diagonally opposite, might look good.

Just an idea.

Tom
