Cutting down a tree
« on: July 24, 2015, 03:36:44 PM »
I have a cherry tree in the garden and I am going to give it the chop ( and I am not giving out my address). I know how prone it is to splitting but to give me a slightly better chance I thought I would wait until Autumn would I be better waiting a few months more like into winter to give the sap time to drop a bit

i know where there are 2 large dead Cherry trees - i wonder if its worth going to ask if i can put the saw through them?
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thank you Mark that is what I was thinking but thought I would check first.

What's the worse that can happen they could say "No" if you don't ask you will never know and regret not asking

if they are of a decent size then they should be milled in my opinion.

they will need to be roughed out straight away or you risk really bad splitting.

i've done a fair few recently and have had lots of problem with the sapwood leading to major splits even when i've covered the things in pva...

Trees store sap, sugars and nutrients during the dormant season ready for a growth spurt in spring (hence the best time to feed your plants is during the second half of summer, August Sept.) Some trees exude a large volume of sap when cut during the winter because of the lack of sap movement as it is almost 'under pressure' when it is not circulating so felling during the growing season would be my preferred time.
