Not .. brown oak !
« on: July 28, 2015, 08:35:08 PM »
This will appear to most of you as brown oak , however it is Sweet Chestnut affected by a fungi ( laetiporus sulphereus) which results in a similar effect  ( rich discolouration )  I particularly like the multiple sets of concentric circles in the grain on this one ....

Should you rotate the image 90° right or left ... there appears an human/alien skull, eyes with goggles and nose ...   :-\  ..or it's just an unusual and unique piece, turned to the point of imagination .. looks as if it's a book leaf image.

The Scream by Edvard Munch. I wouldn't have thought it was oak but certainly doesn't look like any chestnut I have turned either. Judging by the rings you had a lot of branches coming off that piece of wood. Looks like one of those pieces that begs to be touched as it has a very rustic look but probably like the proverbial childs backside.

That's quite a piece, with amazing symmetry. Even when ignoring the colour, it's still tricky to see the usual features of chestnut.

he said it's sweet chestnut, not horse chestnut...

it's no surprise you can get a brown sweet chestnut as it's in the same family as oak.

must have had wobbly grain to get figure like that.

A lovely piece and nice to see the wood spirits raising their heads again.  :)

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thanks for the comments guys , it is quite a deep bowl and it is just the growth rings , no knots or anything else , I especially liked the concentrics on the rim as well as in the bowl .  The fungi is not unusual but the wood is often too soft to do anything with .  This fungi often leads to complete failure of branches or complete trees .....Terry ..

TWiG,

you don't show much of the bowl, but you're showing us the grain's effect and that is a beautiful effect.
