In a different forum some years ago the challenge was to make a Christmas decoration. This was mine based on a Japanese Inro Box which is slightly oval. It held a single round chocolate but could just as easily hold any small gift.

I have learnt the first rule of woodturning.
The internal diameter should never exceed the external width.
Nor the internal depth, the external height.
Does that make me an expert now ?

Thanks Graham. I must hand the credit to the Japanese and the Inro boxes  :) I just mixed it up a bit and showered it with glitter.

To make the box oval simple glue to pieces together that have been planed with a 6-8 mm piece of waste wood in the middle. Mark the centers accurately,  and turn as with a normal hollow lid box. Then split the parts and glue the two side together and that's it. I did write an article in woodturning magazine about how to make one in issue 219.

no that is me taking the picture with a tripod, to get as much info as I wanted I needed a slow shutter speed so the tri pod stops camera shake.
