Sunrise Bowl - warning - it ain't Round & Brown
« on: September 08, 2015, 06:46:57 PM »
H10.5cm D 24cm lime wood, Acrylic.
I Love that you can make wood look like ceramic or glass and that is obviously my aim here.
C&C's welcome.

Jason,

Okay so the first post was a bit of fun.

I go with your comment;
I Love that you can make wood look like ceramic or glass and that is obviously my aim here.

My card has a bowl I made on it which looks like blue glass, which shocks people when they see I'm a woodturner.

Though you've got a very fine and smooth finish if you've used acrylic, was it sprayed?

I like the finish but the form just looks wrong to me.

Why should wood look like ceramic?  Anybody can explain that to me?

I'll answer that, Yes.

I walked into a shop in Exeter and saw (what looked like) a wooden vase, picked it up and burst out laughing. The proprietor asked what was funny, I said 'It's ceramic', he said 'Yes!' so I showed him my card and said, 'That's wood' (see earlier post).

Jas

I like what you have done with the colour, not so keen on the shape but that might be down to the shadow of the colour

All the best

Hello folks! ;D
George - I think in truth the form isn't shown well here, it was a pig to photograph!!! when you see it at a normal angle on a table, it looks like it's floating on the table.
Sevilla - of course it doesn't have to, but I love the tradition of trompe l'oeil in art, it's fun to screw with peoples minds - in a good way! Part of the pleasure of woodturning for me is in surprising people - be that with Trompe l'oeil, a hidden compartment in something, or varying layers of colour, texture, etc, but where there is a stunning piece of wood I am as happy as the next man to show off the grain!
And yes there is a very, very, well established historical precedence of ceramicists and other artists making their product look like wood, stone, metal, etc, for hundreds of years! You name it, they've done it!
 dr4g0nfly - yes definitely spray  ;)

heres a different angle for you

Jason.....well done for the effort and for the finish, but it's just not my style. Not that I'm against the concept of making wood look like something else (I've learnt to accept that), it's just that I like to see some semblance of the raw material in the finished piece. For me, the epitome of the art of taking a piece of wood and presenting it with a feel and appearance of ceramics, is the work that Eleanor Lakelin does with bleached burrs, which have the appearance of white bisque pottery, but close inspection reveals the grain and the natural voids of the burr.

Jason I think this is a really nice piece. I also quite like the shape. The colour reminds me of lustre ware glass or ceramics and strangely I do not like lustre ware but like this piece. Well done.
