A slight departure from the norm perhaps
« on: December 22, 2015, 08:03:01 PM »
I  have been playing around with this concept for a few months now. never quite got it right. Camphor Laurel 20cm by 16cm Danish Oil and Nitrocellulose then buffed.
I am not totally sold on the shape, it actually looks better up side down :)

I am not sure which part of this isn't finding your approval, to me it looks gorgeous any which way I look at it. May I ask: how do you make the grooves? A power carver or manual carving? And then loads of sanding I suspect?

Like that a lot.  Lovely basic shape with really dynamic texturing/shaping.  Almost reminiscent of a tornado or water spout......great movement.

I lay them out by hand and carve the same way.

I like this one very much, Hughie. Perhaps it's the free-nature of the spirals that appeals to me more than your normal geometric approach and yep, I too like it upside down.

Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Thanks for the positive comments as this one is rather a prototype :)

Les I have another on the lathe more of a vase type and should lend more to this type of embellishment.

Hughie, at first I thought it was one of your spiral work vases with a spiral missing, then I realised that the spirals are irregular, giving it a very organic appearance, almost as if an octopus had wrapped it's arms around to form the shape, which the high gloss reinforces giving a wet appearance.

I like this, yes, it's outside your normal forms shape but it has a living feeing about it.
