Dennis's Carving tools
« on: January 04, 2016, 09:41:16 PM »
An elderly Lady who lives across the road from us has given me a box of her late husbands carving tools.
Dennis was an accomplished turner and carver although in latter years his eyesight got so bad he could not see to do it anymore.
Dennis was very involved with the local church and there are a number of examples of his work there. Several years ago about a couple of years before he passed away he asked me if he could come and see my work. Due to his poor eyesite I had to take his arm and lead him into my little gallery where he picked up a lot of pieces and just felt them. He was very close to tears and so was I it was so sad to see him handling work that he could not see.
A couple of days ago Girda asked if I would go over and see her and she told me Dennis would have liked me to have had his carving tools. She had discussed it with her Sons and Daughter and they all agreed I should have them
Obviously I will never part with them but I don't suppose I will ever use them but they are a nice keepsake

I think carving would be too time consuming Pete but you never know.

I did have a go with someone who was really good at it a few yars back and as you say it is time consuming. Got as far as making a 2d rose and it took me hours LOL. I look at some of the things on the WI forum and think it is beyond me, skill or patience.

I don't know George.

Possibly not pure carving but to use them to add texture, carved out areas, the Spoons and Vee gouges would be just the job.

I will have to look at the shapes Bryan to see if there is anything I can use but to be honest I think the power carver will be quicker.

What a wonderful compliment to be paid, George. I suspect that there'll be a power cut one day in the future and you'll be tempted to try these out instead of the Proxxon!

This just reinforces what everyone says about those that work with their hands being the nicest people on earth. George I agree with Les, what a lovely compliment to be left with.

The chisels look in excellent condition as is the case, what a fine example of how to look after your tools of the trade.

What a lovely gift,George, enjoy.
