Bit more playing
« on: January 09, 2016, 02:12:24 PM »
In between stock building I had a go at this. (Les will recognise where the idea came from) It is 200mm tall and the wood is hazel. The handle is twisted raffia knotted into place It was surprisingly difficult to get the inside cored out without splitting the wood and I eventually found the easiest way was to do it first then shave the outside to shape. C+C welcome but be aware that it is only an experimental prototype so not finished off e.g. sanded fully or polished.

...Les will recognise where the idea came from....

Certainly did, Pete, it was instantly recognisable and a very faithful own-version of a lovely design. As for it being unsanded/unfinished; that's not a problem for me. It's an organic shape with an element of organic applied art.....it stands as it is and doesn't need a finish!

Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

A good overall effect Pete..... Like the pyro work.... minimal but gives the right effect.

Thank you Les, Tony and Di. I need to keep practicing on this one, believe it or not I find it harder than turning wood that isn't there LOL.

Pete,

I'm not sure what is the experiment, technique, pyro work or handle arrangement.

I can see that at the top rim and base the pyro does not go all the way around, but the bamboo drawing is excellent.

I must admit, when I first saw this it rang a bell with something else I'd seen elsewhere, nothing to do with Les but the 12 Disciples carried by musket men. They contained the measured amount of black-powder for each shot. The larger one is for fine powder for the strike pan.
Oh Lord, Lead me not into temptation…

...Oh who am I kidding, follow me, I know a shortcut!

The experiment Brian is simply with the shape and design. I find that if the shape is kept simple with no frills it either works or doesn't and I have made a few which were not right but can't always work out why. Not sure if that explains it LOL. The idea for these came from some pottery that Les and I were looking at and the shapes used there don't work in wood for example, look clunky and heavy. Translating from a different medium to wood often means adapting shape and design. I have the same thing with the goblets. (Sounds almost as if I know what I am talking about LOL)

Thanks Ed. The pyro work is done by Mo, my partner, she is the artistic one. We collabrtate a lot on things like this. It is done freehand yes. Her background as a top line furniture designer comes in very handy LOL.
