Black walnut vase
« on: January 14, 2016, 09:55:00 AM »
Hello here is a vase 14 1/2 inch high. I
The body is made of black walnut and the  foot by another piece of black walnut with a cherry burl ring in between. I made this vase a while ago but never got to post it. C and C and suggestions are welcome.
Regards.

I like everything about this except for the ring.
I think it would look much better without the ring.

I don't think a ring does anything for it sometimes you have to stop adding things when they are not needed

The lines of the vase are really lovely, slender and elegant.  But like George I don't like the ring....I appreciate it's there to cover the join but I would prefer the flowing lines to continue into the foot rather than being interrupted by the ring which has no other real purpose.  For me it adds nothing and only detracts from an otherwise very attractive piece of turning.

I agree with George. In fact, I think it would look better without the foot, although it would lose a lot of the stability.

Another one who doesn't like the ring I'm afraid. Suprtfluous and robs the vase of clean lines. It's a lovely clasic shape on its own.

Sevilla,

It is a classic form and very usual to have a bead in the narrowest part of the long sweeping curve, but I think you've made two mistakes. The bead is too big, a smaller bead would look more attractive and the bead and foot are both different woods to the main vase.

I'm guessing you've wanted to give the form more height, to do that you've turned a foot and used the bead to obscure the joint. The lines are right but the constant changes in timber makes it look wrong.

Shame because it is a very well turned shape.

Sevilla I would keep the ring but just blend the shape of it in with the rest of the vase. I like it.
