Nice piece of Oak burr there Pete, it's a favourite of mine to turn and the beauty of the wood just speaks for itself. What finish have you used?
Cheers
Rick

Amazing timber, you seem to have brought the best out of it.

With a burr like this to what extent are you following a preconceived design with dimensions or start and follow what the wood seems to shout to you?

To do what you do and Iwould hope to do you need to be an accomplished turner and have an extensive knowledge on how to get the best out of the wood the tree has given you

Thank you George. Appreciated.

Phil: Pieces like this I know that I am going to make a bowl but I tend to design as I turn if that makes sense. With burrs and the woods I usually use e.g. damaged, I can't know what it will be like as I get into it so I work with the wood. if I am doing a piece that has to be a certain design or shape I would use wood that I have more confidence in doing what I want it to. Hope that makes sense.

I'm with everyone on the rim detail...it really helps to define the bowl, and I also like the way that you've brought the outside of the bowl to quite a sharp juncture with the rim. It's all too easy, with crusty burrs like this, to settle for a thick rim and strong juncture between rim and wall, so a wafer-thin joint is unexpected, but works well and makes an interesting change.

Thank you all.
John, I used a tenon which was mainly wood but had a bit of bark so gave that a soak in CA glue and left to harden. I turned the inside with the tailstockup for most part leaving a bit in the centre of the bowl until the end just to play safe then reversed onto a padded faceplate to remove the tenon.

Pete,

I cannot improve an anything that has already been said, but can I ask,

How do you treat the bark on the outside, leave it as it is or do you work an oil or similar into the grain?

Thank you. I basically just buff it Brian. I have oiled them in the past but found that the oil seems to seep out leaving marks, probably me but buffing seems to work. If the bark is a bit loose I might dropsome CA glue in to fix it first. Otherwise simple carnauba wax.
