Ash?

I was told it was ash, but doesn't look like any ash I've seen, not that that means much....what say you, ash or no ash?? ??? ???

Thanks Les, that's interesting.  I did wonder about olive ash but the flecks put me in mind of beech as well.  Can't find any reference to ash having flecks at all.

100% beech mate...

the lines and colouring are just the result of the heartwood of a good sized tree.

in the lumber trade it's known as redheart and not wanted for the prime white beech but i think it's a great look in the timber.

nice bowl by the way.

Thanks all, nice to know I'm not going mad.  This came from a 36" x 12" x 3" slab someone has had in their shed for about 5 years.  They were having a clear out so asked if I'd like it  ;D  Quite a few cracks in the overall slab but a few more bowls should be possible from it.
