Pewter leaf platter
« on: February 29, 2016, 05:04:23 PM »
This is a Sycamore platter with an ebonised rim and inlaid pewter leaves. It is about 12 inches diameter. Inlaying pewter is a new departure for me from what I normally do. Comments welcome.

I rather like this, Malcy. The contrast of the black against the clean sycamore and then against the pewter is very pleasing. I note that the leaves are all cut from the same pattern, so did you trace them from the same master, then hollow them all out to cast the pewter into?

If I were to be picky and state my own personal preference, I would have settled for fewer leaves, they just seem a bit tightly spaced, but there's no getting away from the fact that it's very pleasing.

Thanks for the comments, Les. The leaves were cut from thin pewter sheet using a Sissix die cutter (my wife has this for her patchwork). A die cut leaf was then used to mark out the sycamore and then hand carved out to make an inlay cavity. The number of leaves was up for debate and we settled on eight in the end. I think four or five would give a different effect altogether. Malcolm.

Like the idea and the skill in this though I agree with Les about there being too many. As a basic design rule (made to be broken I know LOL) things like this are better in odd numbers as well, Be interested however in how you got the shapes and the inlaying done.

The idea and visual effect are really good but I agree the number should be an unequal amount, possibly 7?

But not sure about having Oak Leaves on a Sycamore Bowl.

Do like the concept of this Malcolm....... but can see what others are saying....... we always struggle with how many
elements to add or whether to place them randomly or in a pattern. We can certainly see some of your segmented influence
      coming through...... Very neatly done
      Kind Regards

As an effect, the black and sliver (of the pewter) is very dramatic.

I think it looks quite effective as for how many leaves I don't think it matters .Who is counting I think that is just being picky.

Hi Malcy,
I like this and no I'm not bothered about how many leaves there are, it looks alright to me. I do wonder though what adhesive you have used to stick the pewter in with and did you worry about differential shrinkage?

would make a great theme for the seasones - this reminds me of winter.
why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thanks for the comments. The pewter is stuck in with E6000 adhesive in a thin layer. I did think about differential expansion issues, hence the use of this adhesive. This is a flexible rubber based adhesive, so I think it will be ok. Malcolm.

Hi Malcy,
that is the adhesive that I use and find that it is very good.
