Starburst
« on: March 17, 2016, 05:41:58 PM »
Hi guys playing about with colour again.  This is a piece of local Sycamore about 11" x 2". Initially held on my vacuum chuck (as not to leave a mounting hole on the face due to the off centre bowl) to turn the base and foot, then reversed onto a jam chuck to turn the face, decorate and turn the off centre bowl part.
I used a cheaper metallic acrylic paint from the local art shop(even though I have more expensive paints) then sealed and lacquered the outside.
Colouring is not to everyone's taste I know, but it's good we are all different, and I like it, lol.
C & C's welcome as usual.

Best Regards

Gary

Very nice indeed. That bowl is very off-centre. Your lathe must be bolted down or you must have worked at very low speed for this. And I do wonder how you did actually mount it for the turning of the bowl part.

Hi fuzzyturns, thanks for the comments and glad you like it. Yes I have bolted the lathe down although it might not need it as it is quite heavy on it's own (Record Maxi 1, 209KGs).
As for the mounting of the bowl it was done two separate ways. Firstly, I put the blank on my vacuum check to turn the base(could be done with a glue block) so that I never left a screw hole in the face due to the bowl part being that off centre. Then I secured the foot in a Jam Chuck(held by a screw) and squared off the face ready for the first part of the colouring. Once dry the screwed jam chuck was then moved off centre to turn out the bowl and add the final colours.
Hope this helps with your query.

I'm not sure about the use of the red, I've always think it weakens too much when it sprays outward. But the rest of the effect works extremely well.

Many thanks for the comment, yes the red does go off a bit. There is actually red AND yellow there but both are a bit light. I thinned them down a bit to much as I had to turn slower than hoped due to the off centre. If centred then I would have spun a lot faster for the centrifugal effect.  Again thanks for the comments.
