Oak Burr
« on: April 02, 2016, 07:19:56 PM »
This is oak burr and is 15" x 14" not including the base which is another little piece of burr. It's one of those pieces that you see things in and so far we have seen a Hittite warrior, Cleopatra and a gorilla depending on the light LOL. C&C welcome as always.

Hey Pete, that's rather fine, isn't it. I'll bet it was Mo who spotted Cleo! As for me, I see Tony Robinson off the Time Team ;)

Les
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

why do i feel the need to turn a block of wood into shavings?

Thanl you Steve. I used a screw chuck to get the one side levelled off tyhen had it on a tenon. It was held betweem centres a all times and never above about 500rpm. Initially the burr was very uneven and that was more of a problem with the jarring cutting. Not something I would recomend a new turner to try personally. Makes you wonder at some of the really large ones that Nick Agar and others do.

Pete,

I'm assuming it's a thin slice that was unable to become a platter or somesuch. The idea turning it into this sculpture is genius, so many faces for people to find or see, personally I'm going with the Man in the Moon!

Thank you Steve and Dr4g0nfly. The wood was originally very thin and only had enough thickness in one spot to make a very small bowl about 3" diameter. Much more fun using the whole piece and seeing what I finished up with.
