Ice

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allocasuarina_torulosa

A vase that wont hold water, a 'art vase ' then? :)

12" or 300mm high 4.5" or 155mm  dia finished with DO my own recipe. Its mixture of spalted sap and very hard heart wood.

Common enough here in Australia as its used at beaches and on the side of the road especially on freeways. Grows quickly  and its rarely used for turning as it has a massive shrinkage rate and so  splits wide open as soon as it can. When dry the heart wood is very hard with additional hard spots that are hard to turn smooth, sandpaper struggles on the heart timber, no problems with sap timber as it remains very soft.

Hughie,

I can see (just) your more normal work of carved spirals in this but this piece is something else again.

With the reds (rose from the timbers name) and the orange of the sap wood I'm struggling to see 'Ice' in it. A leaping fire is more obvious to me.

How do you see the Ice in it please.

Hi Hughie...whilst I never cease to be impressed by the quality of work in your pieces, this piece really pleases me. The random shape of the flutes and splines is just so darned organic.

p.s. ... there's always dried flowers! ;D
Education is important, but wood turning is importanter.

Certainly can see the amount of work that has gone into this excellent piece Hughie..
Think you have captured what you were chasing.

Thanks for all the positive comments as its an experiment, a little of to the left of what I normally do. But we shall see how it goes in the AWTEX national competition.

Love it.  Great idea and a very effective and dynamic form.  I like it a lot.
