Somerset Stories

From this Friday http://somersetcrafts.com/ are having an exhibition called Somerset Stories and all Members have the opportunity to take part.
I had no idea what I could do to take part so I did some research on the internet and came up with some information about The Glastonbury Bowl an Artefact made of bronze that was dug up  when exploring the Iron age Glastonbury village.
As I do not work in bronze I have made my interpretation in wood with orange  Acrylic studs.
The bowl is turned from local Oak ebonised with a vinegar and wire wool mixture.
The base is Oak scorched wire brushed and burnished with a local stone to give some contrast.

Wikipedia has a lot of info just look for Glastonbury bowl

Sounds like a very interesting subject, George. I always like the scorched effect on oak as it highlights the grain so well, and your added embellishments make a striking contrast.

Like this a lot though I would use lemon juice and wire wool, smells much nicer LOL. if you want to do more of this sort of thing have a look for cabuchons George, flat backed gem and semi precious stones. What I use on my medieval goblets. I'll bring some on saturday to show you if you're interested.

Thank you Pete what I used for the studs was a pen blank and I particularly wanted orange to contrast the black.

Very smart George

I think that when we are turning our wooden art it adds to the piece when you do a bit of research and come up with something as you have done here.

All the best

Very nice, George, I like this a lot. Nice contrast, and I agree, the orange is just the right colour. Having said that, Pete does have a point, and there are natural stone cabochons that have similar colour.

Thank you Fuzzy I am pleased you like it. For how often I would do something like this it would not be worth getting special stones .I wanted to use what I already had and turning down a dozen small studs out of pen blank did not take long

Stunning piece George, I really like this :) Like a few others I think the contrasting colours of the ebonised oak and the orange acrylic have worked out a treat. The canted angle of the vessel/bowl on the base really makes the piece look as if it's meant to be there as it wouldn't quite look right if it was placed vertical.
Brilliant job, thanks for sharing.

Best Regards

Gary

A Very Neat And Well Done Piece George....... with a bit of a  Abstract look to it ( we like abstract ), our only Problem
is Orange neither of us like Orange  ;D ;D Would prefer to see Gold or Bronze Gilt Cream on the studs.
But as always things like this are down to personal taste / choice

Thank you Gary I am pleased you like it .
It stands on its side because it does not have a base the bottom is round.
